OUR PROGRAM LAST WEEK
Bill Melvin of the Knights of Columbus spoke to us about their incredibly active food pantry and kitchen. They have a meal carryout and delivery program that feeds more than 100 people every Wednesday afternoon. The program started as a sit-down

dinner but grew so much that they no longer could fit everyone in the building. This reality led them to add a delivery program for people who cannot get out. They distribute 2,000 eggs a week and provide frozen meals for people who need additional meals during the week. The Archdiocese of Arlington donates dry foods such as cereals and canned items. The soup kitchen also supports other pantries, such as Highland Presbyterian Food Pantry and CCAP. In addition, they have a utility fund that is used to assist people who are in need of help keeping their utilities on. Fortunately, Sacred Heart School and other area schools volunteer to help as well. The Knights also build access ramps for handicapped people who would be shut-ins otherwise.

Our club has members who volunteer, and we, as a club, helped renovate their kitchen and provided a restaurant-quality freezer through a District grant. The Knights of Columbus are very well organized and serve a vital role in our community.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS GRANT PROJECT

Tootie thanked all the helpers!

You have all been excellent at volunteering for the Soup Kitchen Food Preparation at the Knights of Columbus Club! Thank you, but our mission is not completed. We still need help to support this ongoing project. Everyone I talked to enjoyed their time helping prepare the food for the frozen meals that the Knights send out in the weekly food deliveries they make.

We are staffing on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 to 2:00. Helping Chef Maggie Peterson with meal preparation for the frozen meals that are delivered along with the groceries by the delivery teams each week. They are currently offered to over 100 families, and these nutritious meals are very popular and appreciated by the families.

So, to continue staffing the sous chef help for Chef Maggie Peterson, Kit Redner has created a signup genius where you can sign up to volunteer. See the link below. If you did not know your schedule when I sent around the clipboard at our meeting today, you were not able to make the meeting, or you were on Zoom, here is your opportunity to help.

Thank you, and remember, we can not all do great things, but we can do small things with great love. This is a way to make a big difference in a small way.

HEALTH REPORT
Ridge White is in the hospital with a stomach issue, and Donna Parrish does not have a broken kneecap as she feared but does have a very painful knee injury.

If you get a chance, please stop by the Winchester Rescue Mission, where you might find our own Lau- ren Clouse living in a tent during this frigid weather. She does this to interact with and draw attention to our local homeless population.

JAMES WOOD INTERACT

James Wood High recently restarted its Interact Club, which already has 32 members. Some of those members joined the Handley Club to visit with us and shared some of their recent club activities. One event was attending a multi-club conference in Blacksburg where they participated in various competitions, including writing a 6-minute speech on how they can use the four-way test in their everyday lives. One of our Handley Interact students placed second in that competition by showing how, as an immigrant, he overcame the embarrassment of his Cambodian heritage. It was humbling to hear how a nine-year-old desperately wanted to fit in with his peers but moved on from those feelings by consciously incorporating the 4-way test into his life.

BLUE RIDGE HOSPICE – Volunteers Needed!

Blue Ridge Hospice volunteers are some of the most important members of their team. Thrift shop volunteers are needed to assist with receiving, sorting, tagging, and displaying donated items.

Hours are flexible: daytime and evenings, weekdays and weekends. This is a perfect opportunity for parents to volunteer with their teenagers or for retirees. For more information, contact them at 540-313-9200 or Info@blueridgehospice.org.
